Barbara Ehrenreich is a bit of a grinch, but I really like the way she ends her book: on a note of pragmatic meliorism. If resisting excessive cheerfulness motivates a person to work for justice, that should make them (and us) happy.

I can't stand it

Though the ULTIMATE state of the universe may be its extinction, there is nothing in physics to interfere with the hypothesis that the PENULTIMATE state might be a happy and virtuous consciousness...
