"Hands Across MTSU"

From the mtsu Faculty Senate president:

Dear Senators,

On Monday, November 6^th, members of the MTSU community (students, faculty, and staff) will come together in the spirit of showing pride in our diversity and unity as a campus community. Imagine 750-850 (or more) of us, stretching from the Student Union to the James Union building! We are calling this event “Hands Across MTSU”.  You may remember personally, or may have heard about “Hands Across America” that took place back in 1986? Same type of concept in which we will lock hands across our campus for a few moments.

As you can imagine, securing that many people will take a little bit of work, but we can do it! The actual event itself will only take about 10-15 minutes and will occur between classes at around 12:30 p.m. President McPhee and his executive council are not only supporting this effort, but will also be participating.

The intent is to create a sort of “United we Stand” moment for MTSU—not anything overtly political, but just a brief moment where the whole university comes together to celebrate all that is good about this wonderfully diverse community. 

The plan is to create an unbroken line of MTSU faculty, staff and students stretching along the sidewalk from the student union to about the horseshoe in front of Peck Hall.  We’ll quickly gather during the class passing period on Monday, November 6, around 12:30, and the entire event should only take about 15 minutes.  We’ll gather, hold hands, have the entire line filmed, and then disperse.  Almost like a flash mob, without the singing and dancing.

Please distribute this information to your faculty and encourage them to participate.
