Amor fati
Stoicism in action. Tonight I talked with my son, who with his partner, child and dog, has lost pretty much everything of material value he owns. Honest to the gods, he sounded almost cheerful. You know what he said to me? - "Hey, amor fati; maybe something good will come of this." Thank you philosophy.

Wonderful! He sounds like a born stoic.
ReplyDeleteBut the situation, of course, is terrible. I don't really think anyone is literally born with a stoic temperament, it takes work and a good measure of courage to face devastating loss "philosophcially." Good luck and best wishes to your son.
DeleteI am sorry for his loss, but very glad his family is okay. And, it is awesome that he can have such a positive outlook. Good for him!
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine the loss they are going through, but it brings me joy to know that what we're learning in class can sort of help in this situation.
