Group Three

our last discussion was fairly short and it focussed on the Joel Olstean flavor of TV evangalism. Our main focus was on the preaching of prosperity that is characteristic of these wide smiling hucksters, that convince people that all they need to do is send them money......so that god will give them money...what ever happened to the whole camel and needle analogy? http://youtu.be/RqoYQPMAMBs check out this video and tell me what feeling you get from watching....something short like: "I just threw up in my mouth a little." that was mine after "The Hair" came on and was bouncing as she talked about god making me rich....now ia want some good one liners from the rest of you guys.

  1. As a person of the Christian faith I can say that this video probable disturbs me more than someone that does not associate themselves with Christianity. I can also share in the skepticism Barbara Ehrenreich has when it comes to the, excuse my choice of words here, fake, unrealistic, and manipulative use of "positive thinking" that has taken over Christianity. In respects to Joel and his wife, they are in complete contradiction of what the Bible teaches. Whether or not you agree or believe in the Bible is irrelevant. How do you run a church based, not on the words of the writings that the faith was founded with, but on some king of twisted theology consisting of "The Secret" with a bit of Jesus thrown in?

  2. J.O. does seem like a God in front of that enormous crowd.....you cant even see the upper deck in that joint. i didnt hear one "love you neighbor" in there......it was all about; "i'm goin to", and "i'm not going to let" this or that happen to me. im not religious...but i used to be....and while there was a lot of guilt and hell fire...there was a fair amount of forgiveness and charity in there too. seems like as a catholic, i was supposed to be focused on others people happiness and feel guilty about how terrible i was just to kepp me in check. i think the J.O. flavor of christianity so obviousely fraudulent that i am embarrased for him and all the people he has swindled over the years.
