I Want a New Drug: Group 1

FQ:  Part of the Mormon doctrine is to abstain from alcohol, coffee, and tea.  An introduction by Native Americans to a piney-tasting tonic made from a desert plant, what drug (stimulant) is contained within what became known as Mormon tea. Answer: ephedra

Last Thursday's discussion about wisdom prompted a variety of discussions about how to live, and there didn't seem to be any consensus--except there is no consensus.  That seems to be a good thing.  Dr. Oliver, albeit a fan of Jennifer Michael Hecht, was even skeptical of Hecht's "in all happiness theory":  Know yourself; control your desires; take what's yours; remember death.  Maybe if we discover that all happiness theories (or any theory, for that matter) have problems and exceptions.  Maybe that's doing philosophy.

We didn't talk too much about death.  Hecht says to "remember death."  I don't think we have to worry too much about remembering death because death always remembers us and the ones we love.  No need to make a Post-it note and stick it on the fridge.  I say remember life and learn to live it.

Speaking of living, if I had a dollar for every time I played this song in a cover band, I'd have enough to make a down payment on my bar tab.  What's sad is I'm at the age where I can't even wear a Huey Lewis and the News 80s era t-shirt ironically.  But just like Lycas: it's all in my head.

  1. dean! i have this song stuck in my head now. funny thing is that if you had not posted this i was. great minds think alike!

i agree with you on thinking of death. it is something that is going to happen no matter what, so let's just concern ourselves with living a good life now while we can.

FQ: What are some of the "rites of passage" rituals did the Native Americans use with teenagers?
episodes of freedom, festivals with drugs, music, campfires, mad dancing
DQ: do you consider caffeine to be an addictive drug?

  2. I consider caffeine an addictive drug because I usually want more, and I if I don't have any I get a withdrawal headache. Probably won't kick the habit anytime soon, however!
