Wisdom for Group 3

Here's a spot to post our questions. FQ: What is the title of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's book and what did it introduce? On Death and Dying This book introduced the 5 stages of grief associated with dying. They are, denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. DQ: Is death a taboo subject as sex once was? Is the acceptance of one's mortality the key to a happy life? Link: NPR - A Philosopher's Afterlife from All Things Considered

  1. Thanks, Kathy!

FQ: Who asked if any happiness can be expected from learning?
    A: Montaigne (p. 15)

DQ: Hecht wonders why she and "other professors so confidently insist to our students that philosophy, wisdom literature, and even general knowledge will make them happier.", given Montaigne's disparaging outlook on "the wisdom that is supposed to come from knowledge." Do you agree with Montaigne? What sort of role does "wisdom" play in your life?

Commenting on last time: I REALLY enjoyed the gratitude video. Thank you so much, Kathy, for posting that. It really moved me. I just told a story in my storytelling class about the theme of gratitude in my life and it was awesome to watch that video.

  2. I have been watching random acts of kindness films and short videos on YouTube all week since our class discussion. Sometimes I feel as if our class focuses so much on the aspects which take away from happiness that it was refreshing to simple see something good being done and take it for what it was.
FQ: what is the term Hecht creates that means a kind if cheerful world-weariness?
    Answer: sour charm
DQ: other than the four doctrines for happiness, what others do you think are easential for your own happiness?
I cannot get the link to post from my phone, but if you YouTube "givebackfilms" there are videos on young men giving back in various ways. It's only been a channel since October 15th and they have over 100,000 subscribers and one of their videos already has almost 2 million views!
