In Lieu of the Final - Bertrand Russell: No One is Watching You

Every morning across this planet people wake up worry. They worry about what other people will think of them. This happens before they even walk out the front door. They look in the mirror and tell themselves that they need to pull it together. They try to pick out the right outfit and do their hair just so. In some cases these people never leave their house and no one comes to visit that say. Oh, but just in case someone was to visit like a Mormon, a girl scout, or politician, they are ready. These events are less than likely to happen but once every two years.
People who leave their houses do that thing where they check themselves out using reflective surfaces. They check their appearance in the car door window, in big windows they may pass by, or in the bathroom. When in the bathroom they check themselves out until someone else comes in the bathroom. Then they try to look like they are no checking, so they might grab a paper towel and pretend to blow their nose. I think these checks should be called stealth checks because people don’t want others to see them checking to see if they are alright. Isn’t that a bit silly. It is like society wants you to look good, but people in society do not want to see people checking to make sure they still look good.
Whether you want to rock out in your car to Justin Bieber, get a mohawk, dance your way through the aisles of the grocery store, just do it. No one is watching you. While everybody else is checking themselves out in reflective surfaces you can just do you and keep on keepin on. Do not fear the public opinion. Let the others fear themselves while you throw your brick of fear at the window and out of your life. It is more important to live your life the way you want to and be happy than to worry about the thoughts of others. As long as no one will become injured because of your desires there is no reason why these desires should not be pursued. So, No one is watching you. They are watching themselves. Enjoy you life.

  1. I agree, with one qualification: we still need to keep an eye on ourselves, not in obsessive self-consciousness but with the conscientious intent to be good and happy.
