Post 2 - Bertrand Russell: Over Working

Work is what many of us have done throughout our lives to survive. We need money pay for our food, utilities, phones and medicine etc. Work is one of those things that sometimes can be good or bad depending on the job. If you find yourself in the right field doing something that you enjoy you may feel that you are not working at all. On the other, there are some people who hate their jobs and stay with whatever that job is forever.
When doing any sort of job, even if you hate it, there is a certain amount of stress that is relieved. There is a sense of both independence and a lowered worry about what you will have to survive. You know where your life necessities will be coming come from. You can by them at the store. All of this increases your happiness. This only increases your happiness to a point. After working through this first part where the happiness is we come to the next part where the unhappiness is.
After working for a while at a job you like there will be a growth in boredom and unhappiness. I used to work at UPS. When I went to work I actually did enjoy going there and moving around. I worked there for two years and went through two of their busy holiday seasons. While the paychecks and the people were great the work conditions could sometimes be terrible. Physical fatigue is good for us. Russell says fatigue helps us sleep at night, gives us a good appetite and brings a certain zest to pleasures that are on the holidays. However, too much work and fatigue can cause unhappiness. Especially when there is not a good enough payoff. I remember going into work in December about a year ago and working in negative seven degree weather. It was almost unbearable, but I somehow made it through. In the end there was a nice paycheck that made it all worth it. It definitely made me happy.
