Shout out to group 3 for (9/5) reading

To the lovely people of group 3,

I usually have to catch the bus after class so I thought I'd open this post up for our group to decide how to divy up the "focus of reading" for chapter 3 (beginning, middle, end). I'll go ahead and volunteer to be on board for the beginning. Post in the comments what portion you'd like to focus on just so we know that each portion is covered and has been magnified/dissected to a dutiful extent by at least one brave soul.
:)

  2. I can focus on the middle, although i'm sure I will enjoy the whole chapter.

  3. I will dissect and analyze the end, although I'm not sure where that starts. With perspectives perhaps?

  4. Thanks Rebecca. I will work on the 2nd 3rd of the chapter.

As for Tuesday's class--I enjoyed the discussion about the experience machine. I would agree that a life devoid of the "down" times sounds empty. I think the range of experience is vital to help identify the real "happiness." But I say that as one who has had a fairly comfortable life. Wonder what someone who has lived the life of Job would say?

    Factual:
Aristotle specified 3 sorts of goods as contributing to happiness. What are they? goods of the soul(moral virtues), bodily goods (health), and external goods (wealth).

    Discussion Question:
I hope we can discuss the riddle of happiness and virtue. Is virtue the basis for happiness or is happiness a prerequisite for a virtuous life? Does an unhappy life make a virtuous life unattainable?

    Link:
This chapter mentioned the work of Nobel Prize winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman. He made the news in 2010 when he published an article about income and happiness. Here's the link to the article: pnas.org/content/107/38/16489.

    See you tomorrow!
